Discover River Cruising as an entirely new way to see the Old World!
River cruising offers an exceptional vacation experience free of the stresses associated with today’s travel. It combines the pleasure of discovering the multitude of charms and landmarks of different destinations with the same exquisite accommodations, award-winning hospitality, and world-class cuisine of a five-star boutique hotel.
Sailing along historic waterways onboard your floating hotel, you’ll see some of the most enchanting places in the world up close. Your proximity to the shore means that colorful hillside villages, picturesque castles, and ancient ruins are within view from all areas of your intimate ship—the restaurant, the welcoming lounge, the inviting sun deck, and your own beautifully appointed stateroom.
River cruising offers an unparalleled level of convenience, as you often dock right in the heart of town, mere steps away from charming squares, magnificent cathedrals, and bustling market places. You’ll never wait in long lines to get on or off the ship; you’ll never tender into port; you’ll never spend long hours wave watching on a vast ocean (which is inescapable on larger cruise ships); and you’ll never experience rough water or motion sickness—only smooth and peaceful sailing throughout your journey.
Europe draws travelers in with the wondrous allure of her history, architecture, art, and culture. Visit Europe, and you can feel the warm sun streaming through the rose windows of Notre Dame Cathedral. Taste rich chocolate sachertorte in a Viennese coffeehouse. Stroll through the vibrant and fragrant Keukenhof Gardens in Amsterdam. Or bask in the glow of old-world traditions at the holiday markets in Germany. Imagine discovering the unique scenic treasures of Europe from the luxurious serenity of your river cruise ship. Sailing Europe’s glorious rivers—the Danube, Main, Rhine, Moselle, Rhône, Saône, Seine, and Douro—you will discover the heart of Europe’s charming waterside villages and exciting cultural centers while enjoying the most relaxing way to vacation.
There can be no more striking cultural contrast between bustling Vietnam and the tranquility of Cambodia. From Ho Chi Minh City, through the Mekong Delta so rich in human life and endeavor, to the diverse countryside of Cambodia, you’ll discover two countries, two cultures, and two ways of life linked by one river, the Mekong, that have shaped these nations.
To experience Russia only by land is to miss a major part of its character and history. Discover the soul of Russia along the shores of the Volga. Follow the path of Peter the Great and sail from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Experience the rich cultures, traditions, and royal histories of these two legendary cities. And as you travel along the river, discover another side of Russia: its remote forested islands, vast lakes, tiny summer houses, quaint lifestyles, and pastoral landscapes. On your journey, meet the people who embody the true soul of this proud country.
Timid about touring China on your own? Why not consider a Yangtze River Cruise? With a variety of enriching events onboard your ship, you can enjoy intriguing cultural presentations, informative lectures, and a traditional fashion show with costumes dating to the Han Dynasty. When you’ve whet your appetite for gorgeous things, stop into the onboard gift boutique to shop for pearls or other local treasures. During scenic cruising, you’ll discover the breathtaking views of the Three Gorges, and other stunning sights of the Yangtze from the Pinnacle Deck.
As you can see, the options are endless, along with pre- and post- cruise options to round out your cruise and see the sights in more detail and allow you to acclimate yourself to the time zone before boarding your cruise. So call us today to speak to a River Cruise Expert and book your dream vacation!
This month’s e-newsletter focuses on traveling solo safely and without paying exorbitant single supplements.
With shared tables at mealtimes, cocktail parties, group activities on board & ashore, and even gentlemen hosts to ensure that no one is stuck for a dance partner, it’s easy to see why cruises can be such a magnet for those travelling alone.
Stiff competition today means cruise firms often reduce single supplements or drop them completely on certain sailings. Cruise lines such as Fred Olsen, Swan Hellenic, Cruise & Maritime, Saga Cruises, and its sister line, Spirit of Adventure, which tend to attract an older clientele, have traditionally catered to solo travelers.
River Cruising is another area that caters well for singles with companies such as Uniworld & AMA Waterways waiving the single supplement on select 2013 Europe Boutique River Cruises. Some river cruise lines, such as AMA Waterways & Viking River Cruises even have a few single cabins.
Among cruise companies, Fred Olsen has the largest choice of single cabins, with 190 on its fleet of 4 ships. Some companies are also now incorporating single cabins into their new ships – P & O’s ship Azura, which launched last year, contains 18 inside & outside single cabins. Their instant popularity has encouraged P&O to add a handful of single cabins to its existing Aurora & Oriana. Norwegian Cruise Lines broke the mould on cruise-ship accommodation by including a block of 128 single cabins on its latest ship, Norwegian Epic. This group of bijou & funky ‘studios’ are small at 100 sq ft, but guests also have the use of their own lounge, complete with bar & TVs, where they can meet other singles.
Holland America Line does not have single cabins, but it runs a popular Single Partners Share Programme, enabling same-sex passengers to share (you pay the per person double occupancy fare, even if there are no other single passengers to share with).
Also, Gutsy Women Travel was created for like-minded women who love to travel and want to share the experience with others.
